Javi and Cris commissioned us for this interesting project to design and build a detached house, which must be one of the most exciting, meaningful endeavours a couple can embark upon together. In a few months, this project full of enthusiasm will come to an end and everyone involved in the process is completely satisfied with the outcome.
The clients had a good plot of land and a very clear idea of the functions and materials they wanted in their home. Designing the house from scratch meant that we were able to create a home that is perfectly suited to their needs and lifestyle. We stayed on budget, avoiding superfluous elements and focusing on what was really important. Of course, that didn’t mean scrimping on the design or the visual appeal of the carefully chosen materials and finishes.
The house was built from precast concrete slabs, which formed the structure and envelope of the building. This solution made the construction process far quicker: both the house and the outdoor space surrounding it will take less than a year to complete. It also offers a superior finish, requiring less exterior maintenance, and improved structural performance. In this case, it plays an aesthetic role as the concrete is left as the outer finish.
Laid out on a single floor, the house interacts closely with the exterior environment. It is designed as a series of volumes slotted together, which open up to different orientations to create a wide variety of intersecting views between the interior and exterior.
Our aim was to create small, intimate spaces rather than large, open-plan areas that can be rather dreary through a series of interconnecting rooms and a very simple, streamlined programme of uses. A floor area of just 150 square metres houses five rooms – not bedrooms, as the clients have put their own personal stamp on each one.
The master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and private dressing room. The children’s bedroom, near the couple’s room. Cris’s studio, which opens onto the swimming pool and terrace. Javi’s recording studio, which is separate from the other rooms and more private. The guest room, which is designed as a spatial prolongation of the living room.
The outdoor space follows the same concept, hugging the volumes of the house to create small, distinct, delimited spaces: the swimming pool, the eating and barbecue area, a small living area between volumes and Cris’s terrace.
