REMOTE RENOVATIONS

Kathy and Paul bought this penthouse apartment with stunning views of the city in 2020. The onset of the pandemic that year and the 7,000 kilometres separating the clients from their new home obliged us to plan the renovation remotely. The huge trust placed in us by the clients and a steady workflow during the design and construction processes made the project a success. This project – and other, similar projects that we have successfully completed as a studio – shows that it is possible to work remotely in cases where clients are unable to be present.

CONCATENATED SPACES

The unusual geometry of the apartment made the layout rather challenging so we opted for a radical solution: the spaces were laid out in a chain, with one leading to another in a carefully designed sequence. The day area operates as an entrance and connects the various corridors in the apartment. One end of the day area leads to the master bedroom and en-suite bathroom while the other end leads to the kitchen, which provides access to the second bedroom. This design minimises the circulation areas and maximises the living spaces as much as possible, making the most of every available square metre.

A BALCONY OVERLOOKING THE CITY

Contemporary lifestyles demand more and more outdoor space. In this renovation project, the balcony is a central element and the main spaces in the apartment are designed around it. The living room opens out onto the balcony and views over the city via a large window. With its unique pentagonal geometry, the master bedroom also interacts with the outdoor areas. The way in which the different spaces are laid out around and interact with the balcony and the open views that it offers give the feeling of a detached house in the middle of the city.

MATERIALS

This renovation is dominated by bright white and a palette of traditional, natural materials. The floors and carpentry are made from oak, while the intricate mouldings running around the irregular geometries of each space and the carefully selected furniture add character and colour to the apartment.

"They took care of everything. Absolutely everything from the demolition to the design to all of the trades people coming, all the permits."
