Sometimes, all a renovation needs to do is rework elements that are now obsolete or no longer work aesthetically or functionally in order to bring them into dialogue with more charming and characterful parts of the home. That was the premise behind our renovation of this apartment in Valencia’s La Petxina neighbourhood.
With natural light pouring in, this chamfered apartment has parquet floors, high ceilings, attractive original cornices and mouldings and arched doors with glass detailing, which we knew we had to keep intact.
The renovation focused on updating the spaces in the apartment that were most outdated. The kitchen area was opened up to the rest of the house, allowing more light to enter and establishing a stronger relationship with the living areas. High-quality, natural materials were used. The bathrooms were made more functional with more contemporary materials.
Partition walls were removed to connect the kitchen to the rest of the apartment and create new gathering spaces, like the wooden table surrounding the pillar, which screens the view towards the bathroom. The kitchen was redesigned and the layout reworked. A large floor-to-ceiling kitchen unit was designed to evoke an oak sculpture.
The space is dominated by an imposing floor-to-ceiling kitchen unit made from oak that rises up like a wooden monolith, its finger pulls at different heights creating an interesting visual interplay.
