After relocating to Valencia, Erin and Thomas were fascinated by the light, ambience and aesthetics of their new city and commissioned us for this interesting renovation project in 2021.
Renovating an apartment with almost 100 years of history in a 1930s building was an exciting challenge for us. Successive renovations and lack of upkeep on the building had obscured all elements of interest in the apartment. We opted for a total renovation that would showcase all these features – exposed brick, wooden beams and ceramic beam fills on the ceilings – but completely rework the layout of the apartment to meet the clients’ needs and suit contemporary ways of life.
During this process, we stripped, uncovered, restored and incorporated the most distinctive original features and brought them into dialogue with much bolder, more modern materials.
The original materials, such as wood and exposed brick, lend warmth to the apartment and are complemented by touches of bright colour. Eye-catching elements such as the cobalt blue lacquered wood in the kitchen and the colourful tiles in the bathrooms are just two examples of this. The floor is treated as a neutral grey canvas, almost like a backdrop to the carefully chosen furniture, where the warmth of high-quality, natural, traditional materials is once again a priority. As a final flourish in this story of renovation and conservation, several of the original chandeliers have been restored.
Plaster mouldings, which are so prevalent in Valencia’s Eixample neighbourhood, are another key feature in our renovation. Every ceiling in the apartment is adorned with new mouldings and decorated friezes, creating an unabashed dialogue between tradition and modernity.
