We always find it rewarding to work for familiar clients who decide to put their trust in us because it gives us an opportunity to prove ourselves by delivering a well-designed and executed renovation. Juan Carlos commissioned us to oversee a total renovation of a small apartment with views over the River Turia. The apartment holds sentimental value for him, as he was born there and is now returning to spend his retirement.
Untouched for many years, the apartment was in need of modernisation to bring it up to contemporary living standards. We gave it a much more open-plan layout that was better suited to the occupants’ needs, while preserving some of the unique material and formal characteristics that would echo its hundred-year history.
Opting to showcase the apartment’s most distinctive materials and forms, we exposed the brickwork and the concrete lintels over the windows. The large, curved windows on the façade were replicated using white lacquered wood and the original shutters. This touch of warmth is complemented by new, more modern, neutral flooring to replace the damaged, modified existing flooring. Meanwhile, the bright-white architecture in the rest of the apartment makes it intensely luminous, interspersed with dashes of colour on the kitchen tiles, bathroom tiles and furniture.
